Stress and Anxiety

Many people use the words "stress" and "anxiety" interchangeably, but they are not exact equivalents. Put very simply, stress originally meant something that pressures or influences an individual, and anxiety is an emotional response to the stress, or stressor. Some examples to illustrate this difference: a man is asked to give a speech in front of a hundred people (stress) and gets butterflies in his stomach and has sweaty palms (physical signs of anxiety). A woman doesn't like airplanes but has to fly to California (stress) and feels tense, a bit nauseous, and irritable (anxiety). At the end of the trip, she may well be exhausted, because of the amount of energy consumed by her anxiety.

Worrying about the future or events beyond immediate control is common place. In fact, most Americans report experiencing stress in their lives, and about half report that their stress has increased over the past year. Money and work are the leading causes of stress (mentioned by about 70% of respondents in a recent survey).(1)

The effects of stress aren't just in the brain. Some of the common physical signs of occasional anxiety include fatigue, occasional problems sleeping, indigestion, weight gain, hormonal imbalance, and reduced libido.

Echinacea for Anxiety?

Echinacea is widely-known for support of the immune system. It may be one of the best-known herbal remedies in the world. However, even with millions of people worldwide using echinacea, an anti-anxiety effect has never been previously reported. What are the reasons for missing this effect? First, only one species, grown in controlled conditions and processed using special extraction procedures, produces the plant compounds that reduce stress and anxiety. Second, high doses don’t work for relieving anxiety, and most immune supplementation is at high dosages, or standardized to high amounts of immune-stimulating compounds. The anxiety relieving effects are produced at low doses by active compounds that work only in a narrow therapeutic window of activity. It took a team of European researchers to unlock this secret from echinacea, and the result is AnxioCalm™.

What Makes AnxioCalm™ Different From Other Echinacea?

The first indication that echinacea might have previously undiscovered effects came when researchers at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, analyzing different species of echinacea, found that some of the plants contained compounds known to influence brain chemistry. These compounds could greatly reduce anxiety. Researchers then performed additional experiments and further testing that revealed that it is not just the species of echinacea that is important-how the plant is grown and how the key compounds are extracted are what determines whether or not the extract will be effective.

In a comparison test of 7 different echinacea extracts, only one-Echinacea angustifolia root-possessed high levels of the special compounds associated with anxiety relief. These compounds are able to safely bind to brain receptors that trigger feelings of calm and relaxation.* The researchers then set about finding ways to extract and concentrate these unusual compounds.

Reduce Tension, Relieve Stress and Anxiety

In a series of scientific studies, AnxioCalm™, containing a special echinacea extract from Echinacea angustifolia root, was compared to other anxiety relieving substances. The results found that it not only met or exceeded their effects, but did not cause drowsiness, which can be a common side effect.(2)

AnxioCalm™ was then tested in human volunteers who reported experiencing increased stress and tension. A standardized assessment tool was used to measure their feelings of anxiety at baseline, and compared with responses 1, 3, and 7 days after taking the specialized extract. After one day of AnxioCalm™ use, the participants experienced a significant reduction on the anxiety measurement scale, which increased to a 25% reduction by day 7.*(3) Additional laboratory tests have confirmed that AnxioCalm™ is free of side effects, even at dosages much higher than recommended for anxiety-reducing effects.(4)
