An Interview with Dr. Kenny De Meirleir

This is number 42 in a series of interviews that Llewellyn King has been conducting with prominent CFS/ME physicians. In this short interview, King asks Dr. De Meirleir, who has seen between 15,000 - 20,000 patients since 1990, what treatments he uses for his patients, and whether patients get better.

Main points:

  • CFS/ME starts as an infection, but later develops into an autoimmune disease
  • CFS/ME is easiest to treat in its earlier stages, particularly among people who are in their teens and early 20s
  • Treatments must be individualized, because patients are at different stages of the illness
  • About 50% of Dr. De Meirleir's patients get better
  • There is considerable overlap with MS and other autoimmune diseases
  • Dr. De Meirleir has has partial sucess with Ampligen, but he streses that no single treatment will work for all patients
  • More basic research is needed into the causes of chronic inflammation in CFS/ME
