“Venture philanthropy” is the use of private philanthropist/foundation money to underwrite research ventures, in hopes of speeding development of helpful therapies for “overlooked diseases.” On September 15, Wall Street Journal Health Blog writer Amy Dockser Marcus reported on $10 million in funding that the Hutchins Family Foundation has promised to provide in support of ventures pursuing the cause & cure of 'chronic fatigue syndrome' (ME/CFS) through a newly-formed "Chronic Fatigue Initiative."

See “Applying Venture Philanthropy to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” to learn more, review readers’ comments so far, and perhaps add your own.

Visit the new Chronic Fatigue Initiative website (CFInitiative.org) for details on their research programs, lead researchers, and plans for "Accelerating the medical community's knowledge of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome through research grants and collaboration." To read a press release on the CFI's Sep 15 launch, click HERE.

And to send an online thank you card to the Hutchins Family for their very generous efforts to help ME/CFS patients by setting up the Chronic Fatigue Initiative, go to http://www.groupcard.com/c/8ivnz68UL1B and at the top of the page click on the link to sign. The ME/CFS & FM Information Exchange Forum, which set up this e-card, notes that "it says you need a Facebook account - but you don't. Just 'X-out' or close any box that says you need Facebook and you can sign the card as normal."

As always we thank Amy Dockser-Marcus for her balanced coverage of the ME/CFS beat.
