Thanks for this news go to the Nature News blog “CFS scientist finds a temporary home” by Ewen Callaway, and Caroline T Anderson’s blog “A Conversation with Dr. Ian Lipkin.”
Dr. Ian Lipkin, director of the Center for Infection & Immunity at Columbia University in New York has revealed that Dr. Judy Mikovits (formerly director of research at the Whittemore Peterson Institute) will be working in a lab at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick Maryland, in partnership with Frank Ruscetti (one of her co-authors on the original 2009 Science article on XMRV and ME/CFS).
Their work will represent one of three arms of a multicenter study sponsored by NIAID and led by Dr. Lipkin. The study is designed to determine whether any of the three separate teams can find evidence of XMRV or related retroviruses in blinded samples from the same ME/CFS patients and controls.
Apparently Drs. Mikovits & Ruscetti will also go to Dr. Lipkin’s lab at Columbia to use what he terms “Next Generation Sequencing” of the samples – a technology that Dr. Lipkin says has so far allowed them to discover “500 new viruses.”
