How to Explain ME/CFS to Kids

I have two kids and soon to have another little one on the way. The explanation [of my ME/CFS] that I give to my two young sons (one is 6, the other is 4) is that "Daddy has an illness, even though he doesn't look like it. It means that he is tired all the time, even if he does get sleep. That's why he also takes medicine, because he's hurting all the time too."

And that was all it took for my sons not to bug me about going out and playing and if I did go out and play with them (a game of soccer – just basically kicking the ball around while they ran and kicked it back – or shooting hoops), it was a special time for bonding. As far as I know, they're really good kids because they seem to know when their dad isn't doing so well.

My oldest son says, "Daddy, you need a rest. Don't over-do it, Daddy!" He's a good kid. – pro-photog1970

Grape Seed Extract
... Helped Edema
For years I have had unexplained severe edema in my feet and ankles. But since someone on this site told me about grape seed extract I have been experiencing way less swelling. So I say to any of you with edema, try it. And I hope it works for you too... My new Dr. agrees with me on the grape seed because she herself saw the results when the water pills failed miserably. Doc was prepared with the old “sorry but you just have to live with the swelling” speech, but I had been taking the grape seed and the swelling was going down. Boy did that feel good... to hear her admit that herbal methods do work. - poeticbobbi

... Helped Allergy Symptoms
…I purchased a bottle of grape seed extract. I took the first bottle and thought that it really didn't help, but... when I got to the end of the bottle and didn't purchase another, I realized the "snuffles" came back. Just a little bit of allergy. I then realized that very quietly the GSE had alleviated the allergy symptoms I have had for a long time, but didn't realize it until I had gone off of the GSE. Needless to say I will be getting another bottle and not running out this time.

Note: If you are taking a blood thinner, check with your doctor before taking grape seed extract. And for insights regarding interactions associated with any drug or supplement, check out “Online Resources for Checking Drug & Supplement Interactions” in the ProHealth.com library.

Patient & Caregiver Coping with Sleep Problems, Stress

My daughter suffers from CFS(ME) and Fibromyalgia. I am her full time carer and see her suffer on a daily basis with these debilitating conditions. Thankfully she manages very well a lot of the time by pacing herself and keeping her mind occupied. I must say she is quite stubborn and pushes herself too hard at times and does suffer for it, but psychologically it is her way of having control over her body and mind and it benefits her in other ways.

My daughter has felt much less alone since we found you. ProHealth's amazing newsletters online and your [catalogs] are packed with useful and encouraging information. The latest products she has found enormously beneficial are the Neuro B12 and the wonderful, wonderful Fibrosleep.™ Fibrosleep is absolutely incredible and it is so good that the medication my daughter takes at night to help her restless legs and other problems is being reduced. This is great news.

I have to admit that, with my stress problems and numerous issues to deal with myself, I have started taking it too and found I also am having much better nights and a wonderful restful relaxed feeling if I do happen to wake. Thank you so much for what you have done for us. We are so grateful to you. I am passing on your name to three friends, two who have ME and one whose son has it, and hope they will benefit as we have. From England we send you our very best regards! – Susan and Alice

The Scoop on Traveling with Medications

I am taking my first airplane flight in at least 15 years this week to Washington DC, to see my dad whom I haven't seen in 8 years... [I wondered] about taking all of my meds and supplements with me for the 5 days I'll be gone... [so] I called the TSA. Thought I would share the info here so everyone knows the official scoop.

• I was told that pill cases are allowed in carry-ons, but they require that all the medication in the case must be documented by a doctor or pharmacy.

• If it's in the bottle it came in, no documentation is required.

• The pill case is allowed without documentation in bags that are checked in. – goofgirl

Teacher’s Tips for Flu & Cold Prevention

Some years back when I worked in a private school the longtime K-1 teacher had a protocol she used every flu season and now I use it. And believe me working in a school is full of germs.

Flu Prevention: She took 1 vial of oscillococcinum (Oscillo) every Monday morning at the start of flu season. Now I do this every flu season. Start the end of Oct or first week in Nov and do this through Feb usually. Now if I feel like the flu is coming on, I then take Oscillo as directed on the package. Oscillo works for me every year. I shop for specials and keep a good supply on hand. I swear by this homeopathic remedy.

Cold Prevention: If I start to feel a scratchy throat or sniffles coming on, I start immediately with 2 caps of echinacea every 2 hours for a couple days or so. Always nips it.

Dosing is crucial. These two and colloidal silver are my salvation during flu season. I don't take the flu shots. Also, I'm paranoid about crowds during this time of year. Even avoid the movie theatre. – jaminhealth

Note: Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic preparation apparently best known in France. For more information, try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillococcinum
