Weight Loss and Liver Disease?

Q: I'm overweight with fatty liver disease. I have celiac sprue, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and symptoms of sjogrens syndrome. I have asthma, incontinence and many more things. I take Paxil, trazodone, Lyrica, aciphex, asthma meds, and Enbrel. How in the world can I lose weight and cure my liver disease? – Patsy

A: As we're sure you are aware, with so many health issues, there is no easy answer to your question. Some of your medications, such as Lyrica, may be contributing to your weight problem. And many medications can seriously impact the liver as well.

You need to find a doctor who will carefully review your health problems and medications and develop a treatment plan to address your concerns. You might want to try consulting a naturopathic doctor. NDs are usually willing to spend the necessary time to evaluate and treat you, and they are also very good at dealing with weight loss issues.

You can search for a naturopathic physician in your area at the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians site:

Larger Type?

Q: Is there a way to make the type appear larger besides changing my entire screen resolution? – C

A: Click on one of the A's in the upper right hand corner of articles, and do the same if you’re in a message board. Then if you want to see more at one time, you can click on a smaller A to reduce the type size again and fit more on your screen.

TMJ and Tension?

Q: I've had TMJ [temporomandibular joint disorder] in my right jaw for years but lately it is starting in the left. I have tension in my mouth and sometimes get blisters on the sides of my tongue. What will help my mouth to relax? – Karin

A: Tension in the mouth is just one symptom of overall stress and tension in the body. There are a number of techniques that can be used to help you relax and reduce tension, from relaxation exercises and guided imagery (many types are available on CD) to yoga, massage, hypnosis, etc. It's important to be aware that whatever method or methods you choose will take time and practice. You don't learn to relax overnight. But the benefits are well worth the effort – not only for your TMJ, but for your overall health. The Mayo Clinic has some good information on relaxation techniques.

If you think you are grinding your teeth when you sleep, your dentist can make a stabilization splint, which is a plastic guard that fits over either your upper or lower teeth and helps prevent teeth grinding.

Most blisters on the tongue are caused by type 1 of the herpes simplex virus, a common virus that many people have. Since stress can be one of the triggers that activates the virus, learning to relax and reduce your overall stress should help with that as well.

Tinnitus Help?

Q: I have had tinnitus for six years now in both ears. It is a constant ringing all the time. Do you know of anything that might help? – John

A: Tinnitus, like many other conditions, does not have one treatment that works for everyone. The American Tinnitus Association offers a number of possible treatment options that have been successful for some. Check out their Patient Information page and follow the links to see their treatment suggestions.

Bladder Leakage?

Q: What can be done for incontinent bladder leakage? – Dorothy

A: Bladder leakage is not uncommon for women, particularly for women in menopause. Some find that urine is forced out from the pressure caused by things like laughing, sneezing, coughing, lifting, running or jumping. Others can't hold back the urine when they have the urge to go.

There are a number of things that can help:

Diet – Caffeine is a diuretic and a bladder irritant, so try limiting your intake of coffee, tea, cola, and milk chocolate. Also check any over-the-counter medications you take to see if they contain caffeine.

Kegel exercises – Kegel exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and can help you control incontinence. They need to be practiced several times every day to be effective. See for a description of how to do Kegel exercises.

Pumpkin seed extract – A Japanese research study has shown that pumpkin seed extract can reduce incontinence and improve symptoms of overactive bladder. Two brands we are familiar with are Better Bladder and Go Less. From 500 to 1000 mg a day is very good for strengthening the bladder.

Medication – If bladder leakage is related to menopause, estrogen, either vaginal or otherwise, may help. All variations on the bladder leakage theme have some relation to low estrogen levels in menopause. Estrogen is very important to bladder health, and this is why so many women have bladder problems. There are also several overactive bladder medications available that may help with incontinence. Discuss this with your doctor.

Some women do end up needing a surgical repair if the problem worsens. Be sure to talk with your doctor about this occurring. There are lots of ways to improve it.
Note: This information has not been evaluated by the FDA. It is generic and anecdotal and is not meant to prevent, diagnose, treat or cure any illness, condition, or disease. It is very important that you make no change in your healthcare plan or health support regimen without researching and discussing it in collaboration with your professional healthcare team.
