Fibromyalgia patients with IBS – Needed for study of glutamate-free diet's effect, at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland

  [ Not Yet Rated ]   [ 1 Comment ]
www.ProHealth.com • March 11, 2009

The Oregon Health and Science University in Portland is studying the effects of a glutamate additive (MSG)-free diet on symptoms of Fibromyalgia with IBS. Their 10-week trial will determine effects on musculoskeletal pain, gut pain, day-to-day functioning, and IBS quality of life.

The placebo-controlled interventional study will place subjects on a 1-month glutamate-free elimination diet. (They estimate that half to two-thirds of patients will respond favorably, and that symptoms will reoccur when glutamate is reintroduced in phase 2.)

The researchers seek men and women aged 18-75 who:

• Fulfill criteria for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Fibromyalgia (FM)

• Live in the greater Portland metro area,

• Have transportation to and from the study site,

• Have access to e-mail

• Are willing to discontinue medications with bowel altering side effects.

If you might be interested in participating, visit the ClinicalTrials.gov page for trial NCT00829218 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00829218) to find more information on exclusion criteria, and to contact the study organizers.

MSG and Fibromyalgia
Posted by: Dollyonline
Mar 19, 2009
I have had Fibromyalgia for over 18 years and also have had Chronic Fatigue. I cannot eat anything with MSG in it or I suffer. I get horrible headaches that often last for 4 days. The problem I have is that not all foods are labeled with MSG if it is in the food. There are other names that MSG goes by and I am not aware of all of them. I also cannot eat anything with Aspertame as it does the same thing. My food plan has to be without either of those in it. Dollyonline
