Study in Washington, DC, needs ‘10th Paradigm’ patients & healthy controls for study of cerebrospinal fluid proteins that may explain symptoms

  [ 2 votes ]   [ Discuss This Article ] • July 21, 2009

This study at Georgetown University Hospital – "Proteomics of Cerebrospinal Fluid in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" ( ID# NCT00810329) - is looking particularly for healthy controls as well as participants with ME/CFS, FM, Gulf War illness, MCS, IC, or IBS for testing. The study is sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, and the principal investigator is James N Baraniuk, MD. (Below, see a patient post regarding this study, distributed July 20 via the Co-Cure Listserv.*)

According to the study description, the purpose of this study is:

1. To look for specific set of proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid ( fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord), that are believed to be seen in Chronic fatigue syndrome patients, but not in healthy controls. A similar study that the investigators had conducted before, suggests that significant changes in proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid may be due to the fundamental pathology of this disorder.

2. Increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure (pressure that helps the cerebrospinal fluid to move around the brain and the spinal cord), may be related with certain symptoms like headache, sleep problems, light headedness, increased pain, excessive tiredness (fatigue) even with minimal work and memory problems.

The study involves collecting samples of cerebrospinal fluid, DNA, blood, and urine, as well as a variety of tests.

“The Georgetown University located in Washington, DC, is conducting a very important study regarding CFS. They have identified a specific set of proteins found in the cerebral spinal fluid in patients with CFS. These proteins are not found in healthy people and may be the actual pathology of this disease itself. Upon enrollment I was informed that they are in desperate need of healthy control subjects that are WILLING TO HAVE A LUMBAR PUNCTURE PERFORMED.

“My girlfriend has agreed to participate with me. I am urging each and every one of you to try to recruit a healthy volunteer, as these findings may very well lead to a cure of this horrific illness. Study participants will be required to stay in the hospital for a total of three days where they will undergo testing and will be paid in the amount of $400.00 for their time… Remember, it is up to us to make a difference! Lets solve CFS!”
