Coenzyme Q10 Helped All Gulf War Syndrome Patients in Study – UC San Diego

USA Today scooped the healthcare press Sunday when it published an article titled  “Antioxidants [Coenzyme Q10] ease Gulf War Syndrome, study finds.”

As yet we have found no press release or further information on this unpublished study, led by Dr. Beatrice Golomb at University of California-San Diego and intended for presentation to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

But as USA Today reporter Kelly Kennedy communicated, this is important news indeed for the thousands of Gulf War vets struggling with a horrible toxin-induced illness whose reality was so long denied. Key points:

• Every one of the 46 study participants was helped (by a natural nutritional supplement with no toxic side effects).

• All 20 symptoms they tracked were helped – headaches, cognitive focus, post exertion fatigue, diarrhea, blood pressure.

• The thinking is that Gulf War Illness involves oxidative stress that reduces ATP production in the mitochondria; the brain and muscles require more energy than other parts of the body and so are most affected; and by implication Coenzyme Q10 supports mitochondrial function.*
___

* See for example the article by mitochondrial research pioneer Dr. Sarah Myhill on “Coenzyme Q10 in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).”
