HCA: Nature's Perfect Diet Ingredient?

Losing weight is hard to do. Most experts will tell you to get plenty of exercise and eat a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. Fine. We've all tried that with varying degrees of success. We've also tried diet pills, diet clubs, diet foods, diet programs, diet this and diet that, but none of these man-made solutions seem to be able to resolve this largely man-made problem. Now, nature may be able to do what man has not- cure obesity safely and naturally.

As science and nature merge, new discoveries have unearthed natural remedies for cancer (taxol from the yew tree), heart disease (digitalis from fox-glove), and now, possibly, obesity. Research by the pharmaceutical giant Hoffmann-La Roche and others have found that a rare natural compound called (-) hydroxycitric acid (HCA) can curb appetite, inhibit fat and cholesterol "reduction, and increase energy levels-without chemical stimulants or artificial ingredients.

HCA is an organic acid similar to citric acid, which is found in oranges and lemons. But unlike citric acid, which is plentiful throughout the plant kingdom, HCA is limited to only a few plant species called Garcinia.

The (-) form of HCA (indicating a particular molecular configuration) is the naturally occurring form which exhibits HCNs potent weight loss properties, as reported on over one television news programs. In addition, acute toxicity studies show that HCA is as safe as citric acid. For these reasons, some people are calling HCA "nature's perfect diet ingredient."

HCA Can Help Curb Appetite and Inhibit Fat Production

HCA works by temporarily inhibiting ATP-citrate lyase, the key metabolic enzyme in the body responsible for converting carbohydrate into fat. When food is eaten, calories which are not immediately used for energy are stored in our muscles and liver in the form of a special starch called glycogen. If we overeat, excess calories are converted to fat and cholesterol with the help of ATP- citrate lyase. By inhibiting ATP citrate lyase, HCA decreases fat and cholesterol production and increases glycogen formation. It is believed that filing glycogen stores sends a satiety signal to the brain telling your body it's full, thus suppressing appetite and reducing food intake.

Animal studies have shown that HCA can reduce fat, acid production by 40 to 70 % for eight to twelve hours following a meal. One study showed that people taking HCA for two months lost an average of more than 11 pounds; they reported reduced appetite and increased energy along with fewer ravings for sweets.

HCA Is Not a Chemical Stimulant

HCA also has the advantage of not being a stimulant. Most appetite suppressants work by stimulating the central nervous system. This often leads to side effects such as nervousness, insomnia, depression, hypertension, and rapid heart rate. The body also tends to develop a tolerance toward stimulants, which eventually renders them ineffective. HCA won't result in tolerance or cause the side effects associated with these compounds.

HCA is a nutritional ingredient which can be found in a wide variety of natural health and diet aid products, but check labels carefully. Look for the (-) hydroxycitric acid content, not just the word "Garcinia," which may contain as little as 2-3 percent HCA.
