Pilates (pah-LAH-teez), invented 70 years ago by Joseph Pilates, has been popular with professional dancers for the very same reason it can help people with arthritis - it builds a powerful center (abs and back) that lifts body weight off feet and hips, training your body to use its muscles rather than its joints. Done on a mat or on specialized machines found in gyms and studios, Pilates is a series of low-impact exercises similar to yoga that targets muscles in the abdomen, back and buttocks. Each movement is carefully controlled and most are done in a low weight-bearing position, such as lying on your back, so there is little impact on the joints.
