Alzheimer's Foundation of America Launches New Magazine for Caregivers

Publication Responds to Rise in Alzheimer's Disease NEW YORK, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ --

Is it possible to enjoy a guilt-free getaway from the 24/7 role of caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease? What does it take to safeproof your surroundings to avoid a crisis? How can you feed your brain to build memory? These are questions more and more families are asking as Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia strike an increasing number of Americans.

Now, caregivers can find the answers in a new magazine, Vantage(TM), from the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA). Vantage(TM) is designed specifically for caregivers of those with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses. In every issue, experts will explore medical and behavioral aspects of the disease, safety and other practical issues, and caregiver wellness.

Regular columns will highlight new products, answer caregivers' questions, and showcase poems and other creative contributions from readers. "Vantage(TM) builds on AFA's mission -- to provide optimal care to families confronting Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses. Our goal is to strip away the darkness that surrounds this disease, and acknowledge the challenges caregivers face every day. The more caregivers know, the greater the quality of care," said Eric J. Hall, AFA's chief executive officer.

According to Carol Steinberg, editor-in-chief of Vantage(TM) and AFA's executive vice president, "Vantage(TM) sets itself apart from other publications for caregivers and seniors because it explores issues from the distinct vantage point of dementia caregivers." The quarterly publication is distributed by free subscription to consumers, and to doctors' offices and community organizations.

To subscribe, consumers can visit http://www.afa-vantage.com or call 866-AFA-8484. Vantage(TM) is being produced by HMP Communications, a medical publishing and communications company located in Malvern, PA and Princeton, NJ. The magazine premiered in late August and the next issue will be out in November, which is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month.

AFA is introducing its groundbreaking magazine at a time when Alzheimer's disease is impacting more Americans. Currently, an estimated five million individuals, including one in ten aged 65 and older, suffer from the brain disorder, and one to four family members act as caregivers for each person with the disease. The incidence is projected to triple by mid-century.

The inaugural magazine features "Great Escapes" -- professional advice on how caregivers can let go and enjoy a vacation, and a personal journal of one such a getaway by a mother and son. "Once caregivers understand the significance of their own well-being, vacations become an important part of a caregiver's life-not an indulgence," said Robert W. Figlerski, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist who authored the lead story.

Also featured is a guest column by Emmy-award winning TV and film actress Linda Dano. In sharing her family's experience with dementia, Dano advised: "I used to think that loving my parents meant caring for them was my responsibility and mine alone. Now I understand ... no one can do this alone." Other articles examine the link between diet and brain health, how dementia can mask underlying depression, home safety tips, and products that evoke comfort and dignity.

Founded in 2002, AFA is a New York-based nonprofit organization composed of member agencies from coast-to-coast that provide hands-on educational and social services. AFA's services include a toll-free hotline -- 866-AFA-8484. For more information, visit http://www.alzfdn.org. HMP Communications is a medical publishing and communications company serving the healthcare professional.
