Advocacy Project 2002: Forget Me Knots

“Forget Me Knots” is for people with fibromyalgia syndrome, chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome or multiple chemical sensitivity. This year, CHARGE and NYSN are creating a quipu to represent the years people have lost to these conditions. A quipu is the way the people of the Andes kept records using knots tied in cotton cord. Generally there was a main cord off which other cords hung, each cord containing a series of knots representing numbers. They will have a main ribbon from which they will hang your ribbons.

They ask that you send a ribbon tied with knots, one knot for each year you have been ill with these conditions, and they hope this visual aid will help others see how many lives have been affected, and how many years we have endured.

CHARGE and NYSN ask that you send them a ribbon tied with knots, one knot for each year you have been ill with these conditions, which they will add to their quipu and display it in hopes that it will help others understand how many years these illnesses have already taken from sufferers and their families. Deadline: April 15, 2002.

Creating Your Ribbon:

1. should be a fabric ribbon of any color between 3/8th and one inch thick,

2. should have one knot tied in it for each year you have been sick. (If you have been sick less than a year please tie one knot in your ribbon.) Try to leave about one inch of space between each knot, and it should be at least six inches long, regardless of the number of knots.

3. Please leave an additional three inches of ribbon above your first knot for us to use to attach it to the quipu.

Send your ribbon with a completed submission form* to:
