Kent Holtorf, M.D., on Effective Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
According to Kent Holtorf, M.D., "the medical literature is very clear that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia (FM) are legitimate diseases, and individuals with these syndromes have measurable hypothalamic, pituitary, immune and coagulation dysfunction. These abnormalities then result in a cascade of further abnormalities, in which stress plays a role." Dr. Holtorf discusses his approach to effectively treating CFS and FM.

Final Results of Milnacipran Phase II Study in Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Drugmaker Cypress Bioscience announced on February 10, 2003 the topline final results of a Phase II clinical trial evaluating milnacipran as a treatment for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Milnacipran was shown to provide statistically significant improvement of pain, the hallmark symptom of FMS. This trial is the first to evaluate milnacipran as a potential treatment for FMS.

Chinese Medicine Promising for Irritable Bowel Syndrome [CFS & FM News]
According to researchers, IBS is a common disorder that brings with it a significant burden of illness, poor quality of life, high rates of absenteeism and high health care utilization. Because management options are difficult and many times ineffective, researchers noted many physicians and patients lean toward alternative therapies to alleviate symptoms such as flatulence, abdominal pain and irregular bowel habits.

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: SAM-e
The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, has assembled the evidence available on s-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAM-e) and has shown actual benefit for the treatment of depression, osteoarthritis, and liver disease.
The AHRQ report reviewed the literature on the use of SAM-e in these conditions and identified 294 meta-analyses, clinical trials, and reports, of which 99 articles referencing 102 studies met the screening criteria. Of these 102 studies, most of which enrolled small numbers of patients, 47 focused on depression, 14 focused on osteoarthritis, and 41 focused on liver disease.
