The Pain of Fibromyalgia and Other Conditions: It's All About the Ears?

February 25, 2004

By Norma Mendoza Edwardsville, Illinois chiropractor Dr. Farook Muhiuddin wants his patients to get relief from pain and he offers them several disciplines of treatment, including chiropractic, hypnosis, acupuncture, and now, auriculotherapy. "I like to learn something new that is good for my patients," said Muhiuddin, whose Healthtrax Whole Body Health clinic is located at 340 South Fillmore, one block off Troy Road in Edwardsville. Auriculotherapy is a type of acupuncture of the ear, but it involves no needles. Instead, the auricle of the external ear is stimulated to alleviate conditions in other parts of the body. Muhiuddin calls it the ultimate treatment for pain management. According to Muhiuddin, it augments biofeedback to produce more direct and immediate relief of pain and discomfort. He first uses it as a diagnostic tool to identify areas of pain by detecting places in the ear which are discolored, flaky and tender, or have high skin conductance as evidenced on the Stim Flex 400A, a small machine in his clinic which generates a very mild electrical current. By touching a small probe to different parts of the ear, Muhiuddin said he can determine body chemistry and he uses a chart to map the treatment to be used for each patient. He said there are 300 acupuncture points in the external ear. Treatment is based upon the ancient Asian philosophy of chi, or life force. It is when chi is blocked that illness occurs, according to acupuncturists. It can be caused by stress or tension in the body. Tightness in the back and shoulders is a good indication of tension. "By bringing the body into balance, you allow the chi to flow," Muhiuddin said. Ear acupuncture and body acupuncture can both be used together or each applied separately. They can be used before or after chiropractic adjustment to stabilize postural habits and reduce muscle spasms. Muhiuddin suggests the treatment is successful for treating a broad range of problems including: acute and chronic backache, whiplash injury or stiff neck, tinnitus or dizziness, stress, headaches, phobias, numbness or pain in the arms and legs, fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome. "Chiropractic, acupuncture and auriculotherapy is a gentle, safe, all natural alternative and is effective for many disorders," he said. Pioneered in France a few years ago by Dr. Phil Nogier, auriculotherapy was introduced in the United States only two or three years ago. Muhiuddin believes he is the only doctor in the Metro East to offer it. According to Muhiuddin's literature, the natural pain relieving biochemicals known as endorphins and endogenous morphine substances are found in the pituitary gland and other parts of the central nervous system. Auriculotherapy has been found to raise blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid levels of these pain relieving substances. Muhiuddin began to study chiropractic after practicing medicine for 20 years in his native Pakistan. He was an otolaryngologist in Pakistan and became interested in chiropractic after a friend whom he had advised to have back surgery was able to get relief instead through chiropractic. Muhiuddin came to the United States to study chiropractic at Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis County. Chiropractic is not offered in Pakistan. He brought his family and they settled in Edwardsville where they already had family. After getting his degree there, he began to study acupuncture at Logan. It was also at Logan that he learned about and studied auriculotherapy. Muhiuddin offers treatment to patients who have been told, "There's nothing we can do." He said chiropractic, acupuncture, auriculotherapy and hypnosis may be used individually or together to help a patient lose weight or stop smoking and for drug detoxification. He said the treatments are also effective for treating gynecological, urinary, respiratory, neurological, psychological, circulatory and dental problems. It is also useful in treating allergies. All of these can be treated by releasing the natural healing processes of the body by diminishing overactive bodily functions and/or increasing under active physiological processes. Muhiuddin offers people a free consultation. For more information, call (618) 692-9763 and ask for Dr. Farook Muhiuddin.
