Chicago May 23, 2007 - DePaul to Host Symposium on Making College an Option for Chronically Ill Students

by Editor
March 24, 2007

The Chronic Illness Initiative at DePaul University in Chicago is issuing an open invitation to its third annual FREE Symposium on Postsecondary Education and Chronic Illness, to be held Wednesday afternoon, May 23, 2007. Registration is requested by May 19.

The Chronic Illness Initiative (CII), part of DePaul’s School for New Learning, offers a unique college program for students with syndromes that have waxing and waning symptoms, such as ME/CFS, FMS, and IBS.

The CII program is dedicated to “making college degrees a viable option for people who have the intelligence and capabilities to earn degrees but who have special needs that must be considered in helping them to achieve educational success.” (See for example the fully-linked Chronic Illness Initiative Student Handbook and the article “DePaul Chronic Illness Initiative Offers ‘Paced’ Degree Opportunities.”)

The Symposium - which is open to anyone interested in supporting, learning about, networking, or sharing their experiences regarding activities to help these deserving chronically ill students earn college degrees – will feature:

A Keynote Address on “The Four Phases
of a Chronic Illness,” by Patricia Fennell

Ms. Fennell, a licensed clinical social worker and internationally recognized consultant on chronic syndrome coping strategies, was a featured speaker at the 2007 IACFS conference. She will discuss her research-based model for helping patients negotiate for what they need. The model, which is used by clinicians and patients all over the world, is explained in her book, The Chronic Illness Workbook: Strategies and Solutions for Taking Back Your Life.
