Recall of OTC ‘Staples’ Tylenol, Motrin, Rolaids, St. Joseph Aspirin, More

Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare division announced Jan 15 it is recalling more than 53 million bottles of branded over-the-counter products containing Tylenol, Motrin, Rolaids, Benadryl, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph Aspirin based on reports of a musty, moldy odor and complaints of nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea reportedly dating back as much as 20 months.

FDA inspectors traced the uncharacteristic musty smell to a fungus-killing chemical reportedly used to treat wood pallets employed in storing and shipping the bottled products. The fungicide breaks down when it interacts with certain strains of fungus to form a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), according to reports from the American Chemical Society. TBA in wine bottle corks also causes the musty odor and flavor known in the industry as ‘cork taint’.

As for the health effects of this chemical, McNeil stated they "have not been well studied but no serious events have been documented in the medical literature."
