An Experienced Doctor’s Insights on Motherhood and Fibromyalgia

Few physicians grasp the issues involved in fibromyalgia pregnancy. But Dr. Mark Pellegrino, MD, can offer the insights of experience gained managing many FM moms (and dads). “A frequent question is whether or not a woman should consider getting pregnant if she has fibromyalgia,” he begins. “From a medical perspective, there is no contraindication or unusual medical risk involved with fibromyalgia and pregnancy.”

But “Another concern is whether or not the pregnancy will cause a significant flare-up for the pregnant woman, or perhaps aggravate the condition to a more severe level that persists after the pregnancy,” Dr. Pellegrino adds. “You may find, as I did, that pregnancy can actually make you feel better for the duration,” wrote Gina Hutter, a fibromyalgia patient and now the mother of two. Following is her account of the ups and downs of her first pregnancy – struggling to find physicians able to answer questions about how pregnancy would affect her and the baby, or at least willing to believe in her fibro pain.
