Blood sugar mattered most for another

Among non-Hispanic white participants, the standout factor was different: fasting blood sugar. Those with readings at or below 126 mg/dL in midlife tended to show a slower rate of cognitive change later on. Fasting glucose reflects blood sugar after an 8- to 12-hour fast, and it's one of the more modifiable numbers in a routine checkup — shaped by diet, movement, sleep, and stress in ways that compound over years.

Why the differences matter

The researchers were careful to note that these associations weren't identical across populations, and they think that's the more useful finding here. It suggests that brain-protective levers may not be one-size-fits-all: what moves the needle most for one population's cognitive trajectory might not be the dominant lever for another.
