Researchers from King's College London and ZOE set out to test a simple but underexplored question: does feeding the gut a wide variety of plants do more than taking a probiotic capsule?
To find out, they ran a randomized controlled trial with 349 adults in the UK, splitting them into three groups. One group ate a 30-gram daily blend of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, and mushrooms—more than 30 plant types in total, marketed as Daily30. A second group ate an energy-matched control of bread croutons. A third took a single-strain probiotic capsule containing a well-studied bacterial strain.
This kind of head-to-head design is what makes the findings compelling. Rather than asking whether plants are "good for you" in the abstract, the trial directly compared a food-based approach against the supplement category most people reach for when they think about gut health.
A microbiome shift the probiotic couldn't match
The results were striking in scale. The plant blend group saw increases in 57 distinct species of favorable gut bacteria over six weeks. The control group saw changes in only 14 species, and the probiotic group in just 4. Just as notable: in the plant blend group, the bacterial species that increased were, on average, linked to favorable health markers, while the species that decreased were linked to less favorable ones. That pattern didn't show up in either the control or probiotic groups.
This lines up with a growing idea in microbiome science—that gut bacteria respond less to any single strain introduced from outside and more to the range of fibers and plant compounds they're regularly fed. A diverse diet appears to nourish an entire ecosystem, rather than attempting to seed one new organism into it.
Feeling the difference, not just measuring it
The microbiome data was matched by how people said they felt. Compared with the control group, 55% of those on the plant blend reported less indigestion, 37% reported less flatulence, 35% reported milder constipation, and 18% reported less heartburn. On the energy and mood side, 51% reported feeling more energetic and 45% reported feeling happier.
A smaller sub-study added a real-world test: 34 participants ate a carbohydrate-rich meal either with or without the plant blend mixed in. Adding the blend led to a 43% increase in reported energy, 41% more fullness, 22% higher meal satisfaction, a 71% drop in desire to eat afterward, and a 17% reduction in hunger. In other words, the effect wasn't just measurable in stool samples weeks later—it showed up at the next meal.
What this means for a longevity-minded diet
For anyone optimizing for long-term health, this study reinforces a theme that keeps surfacing in nutrition science: variety may matter more than any single ingredient. A gut microbiome fed dozens of different plant fibers, polyphenols, and micronutrients each day appears to respond in ways a single bacterial strain in a capsule simply can't replicate.
That doesn't mean probiotics have no place, but it does suggest that plant diversity deserves to be a first-line strategy rather than an afterthought. Practically, this looks less like hunting for the "right" superfood and more like rotating through a wide range of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, and mushrooms across the week—stacking small, varied inputs that compound into a more resilient gut ecosystem over time.
