A trial designed to separate two variables

Weight loss on its own is already associated with better cognitive performance as people age, which makes it hard to know whether meal timing adds anything on top of that. Researchers at Rutgers set out to isolate that question directly. They ran a six-month trial with 47 women ages 50 to 79, all of whom received the same instruction: cut daily calorie intake by 500 calories.

The difference was in when they were allowed to eat. Twenty-six women were asked to consume all their food within a window of less than nine hours a day, while the rest ate across a more typical 12-hour period. In practice, the time-restricted group mostly ate between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., averaging an 8.2-hour window, compared with 12.3 hours in the standard-eating group.

Same weight loss, different cognitive results

After six months, both groups had lost a comparable amount of weight—about 15 pounds on average. If weight loss alone explained cognitive benefits, the two groups should have looked similar on mental performance tests too. They didn't.

Women in the shorter eating window performed significantly better on tests of spatial planning and problem-solving. They also tended to make fewer errors on tests of memory and learning, though that particular difference didn't reach statistical significance in this small sample. No meaningful differences showed up on reaction time or multitasking measures. Notably, the researchers found that a narrower eating window predicted a greater degree of improvement—suggesting the effect scales somewhat with how tightly the eating window is compressed.

Why timing might matter on its own

The researchers were candid that this is a small, preliminary study, and larger trials are needed to confirm the effect. Still, they pointed to several plausible mechanisms worth watching: interactions between the body's circadian rhythm, inflammation levels, metabolic health, and the biological pathways involved in sensing and responding to nutrients.

That framing fits a broader pattern—meal timing isn't just a weight-management tool, it may be a separate lever that interacts with the body's internal clock in ways that ripple into brain function.

A practical, low-friction lever

What makes this finding appealing is how little it asks of anyone. It doesn't require a new food, supplement, or workout—just compressing the hours during which you eat, and finishing meals a few hours before bed. For someone already managing what they eat, this research suggests it may be worth also paying attention to when.

The researchers' guidance was specific enough to try: stop eating roughly four hours before sleep, and aim for an eating window closer to 8-9 hours rather than the more typical 12.
