How it Works

Metformin targets multiple pathways involved in glucose metabolism, with its primary effects driven by three key mechanisms:1,6-8

- Decreasing glucose production in the liver

- Enhancing your body’s ability to use insulin

- Slowing glucose absorption in the intestines

Health Benefits

Combats Sugar Spikes

Minimizes post-meal blood sugar fluctuations, supporting stable glucose levels.1,8

Boosts GLP-1

Activates the "feel full" hormone, aiding in appetite regulation and healthy weight management.6

Enhances Cellular Energy

Targets the mitochondrial respiratory chain, optimizes mitochondrial function, and supports mitochondrial regeneration (mitophagy).9,10

Balances the Gut Microbiome

Promotes a healthy gut environment for improved digestion and systemic well-being.11

Protects Heart and Brain

Supports vascular health and helps safeguard vital organs from age-related decline.12-16

Anti-Aging Benefits

Beyond Blood Sugar

Metformin is increasingly recognized as one of the most promising off-label drugs in the field of aging and longevity science. While it’s long been valued for its role in blood sugar regulation, a growing body of research suggests it may also help delay the aging process and extend healthy lifespan in vivo. This new and expanding evidence positions Metformin not only as a trusted treatment for metabolic conditions, but as a powerful tool for supporting long-term health and vitality.1,3-5,8,10,11,17,18

Targeting Health Span

The TAME (Targeting Aging with Metformin) Trial is a landmark clinical study poised to reshape how we think about aging. With nearly 3,000 participants between the ages of 65 and 79, this six-year study is evaluating Metformin’s impact on key age-related factors—including heart health, cognitive function, and cellular vitality. If successful, TAME could make Metformin the first widely used drug to directly target the biology of aging— establishing it as a cornerstone therapy to slow decline and extend healthspan. And the best part? You don’t have to wait for the trial to finish! Metformin is already available by prescription, offering those eligible a forward-thinking option to support long-term health today.4

Key Longevity Pathways Influenced by Metformin

Recent studies have identified multiple cellular effects of Metformin that may help explain its beneficial impact on metabolism and age-related health.1,4,6,8-13,19-30

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should take Metformin?

Though traditionally used to manage type 2 diabetes, Metformin is being studied for its potential benefits in healthy aging. People without diabetes—particularly those with insulin resistance, elevated fasting glucose, excess weight, or a family history of metabolic conditions—may want to explore Metformin’s role in longevity with their healthcare provider.

How do I take Metformin?

Metformin is taken orally once or twice daily, with or after meals, to help reduce stomach upset and improve absorption.

Are there any side effects?

Metformin has a well-established safety profile, with most side effects being mild. Common side effects include nausea, stomach discomfort, and diarrhea, which often improve over time. More serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions and lactic acidosis—a buildup of lactic acid in the blood. This risk is higher in people with kidney disease, so doctors typically avoid prescribing metformin in those cases.

Additionally, long-term use of Metformin can lead to lower vitamin B12 levels. If your vitamin B12 levels become too low, vitamin B12 supplements can help. Also, some studies indicate that individuals over 65 with low muscle mass may find it more challenging to build muscle while taking Metformin.

Are there any special dietary requirements while using Metformin?

While there are no specific foods you must include or avoid when taking Metformin, adopting healthy dietary habits can enhance your results. Pairing Metformin with a balanced diet and regular exercise, as recommended by your healthcare provider, is key to achieving your goals. Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of lactic acidosis and should be avoided or limited while on metformin.

Can Metformin help with weight loss?

Yes, metformin has been associated with modest weight loss. It works by reducing appetite, improving insulin sensitivity, and encouraging the body to burn fat more efficiently. However, it’s not a weight loss drug—and it’s most effective when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Results can vary from person to person.

Is Metformin approved by FDA for longevity benefits?

No, the FDA has approved Metformin only for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. However, like many medications, it is sometimes prescribed off-label for other uses based on a healthcare provider’s judgment. Although Metformin is not FDA-approved for longevity, the agency has authorized its investigation in aging through the TAME (Targeting Aging with Metformin) Trial—a landmark study exploring its potential to slow age-related decline and extend healthspan.

How long does it take to receive my medication?

Once your doctor’s approval is secured—typically within 4 hours on weekdays or 12 hours on weekends—your order will ship via two-day expedited delivery.
