Forty percent of the population suffers from an unsuspected illness one that can be corrected easily. Most common of its 64 symptoms are overwhelming fatigue (and consequent depression), feeling cold especially in the hands and feet while others are comfortable, female ailments, sexual inadequacy and sluggish thinking and poor memory, sometimes misdiagnosed as the start of Alzheimer’s disease.

This is the thrust of Solved: The Riddle of Illness, a perennial best-seller by Stephen Langer, M.D., who practices preventive medicine in Berkeley, California, and James F. Scheer, health/nutrition editor-writer, author of 20 published books.

In this, the second edition of their book, Dr. Langer and Scheer write about hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) and how it can undermine every phase of living. Lab tests often fail to detect it and established ranges of normal function unfortunately do not turn out to be normal for many people.

You can get a good idea if hypothyroidism is a hidden saboteur of your life by a simple test that you can perform in your bedroom. This is based on the fact that body temperature is the most reliable indicator of low thyroid function. Here’s how to do it.

Before going to bed at night, shake down a thermometer. Leave it on the bedside table. As soon as you wake up in the morning after a good night’s sleep, tuck the thermometer snugly in your armpit for 10 minutes as you lie there.

“If your thyroid function is normal, your temperature should be in the range from 97.8 to 98.2. if it is lower, you may be hypothyroid. Women get the most accurate readings if they are not menstruating or are on the second or third days of menstruation.”

Although the best way of coping with hypothyroidism is by taking natural thyroid prescribed by your doctor, some individuals can correct this condition by means of natural nutritional supplements and by avoiding certain foods and fluoridated water, as described in the book.

In the introduction to this book, best-selling author Dr. Wayne Dyer writes, “One of the most important books of our time. Solved: The Riddle of Illness reveals secrets of abundant health physically, emotionally and mentally. In this age of astronomical health care costs which threaten to bankrupt the individual and the nation, it offers new hope, because it deals with underlying causes of a multitude of ailments.”
