Dr. Richard L. Bruno, Chairperson of the International Post-Polio Task Force and Director of The Post-Polio Institute and International Centre for Post-Polio Education and Research at New Jersey's Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, will be speaking to doctors and polio survivors in Indianapolis about Post-Polio Sequelae (PPS) from Thursday, September 12 to Saturday, September 14th. PPS are the unexpected and often disabling symptoms — overwhelming fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, heightened sensitivity to anesthesia, cold and pain, and difficulty swallowing and breathing — that occur in 75% of paralytic and 40% of non-paralytic polio survivors about 35 years after the poliovirus attack.

There are estimated to be 38,000 polio survivors in Indiana. There are more polio survivors than there are individuals with Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis combined. 2002 is the 50th anniversary of the most devastating polio epidemic in Indiana that affected nearly 60,000 people across America. To highlight the needs of polio survivors, Governor O'Bannon has declared September 13 and 14 "POLIO SURVIVORS DAYS" in Indiana.

Dr. Bruno is also the author of The Polio Paradox: Uncovering the Hidden History of Polio to Understand and Treat "Post-Polio Syndrome" and Chronic Fatigue (Warner Books, 2002) and is the world's foremost expert on PPS. Dr. Bruno will be giving Grand Rounds on PPS at three hospitals and the keynote address to the Indiana Polio Survivors Association Conference.
