Guided imagery is an effective form of distraction and relaxation if you have fibromyalgia [and/or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome]. There are many guided imagery audio tapes available. Relaxing music and a pleasant voice help you to imagine a serene place. This promotes deep muscle relaxation, which reduces muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders, thereby reducing pain. The benefit lasts only a few hours, however. Regular use of this technique may eventually produce effects of longer duration.
